The airscene in South Africa is full of superb events. The SAAF Test Flight and Development Centre Fly-In and airshow, Overberg airfield - November 9th and 10 th 2007 - was awarded first prize for the best airshow in 2008 by ' African Pilot ' magazine. Criterias to win this prestigious award are listed on the magazine's website page www.africanpilot.co.za/Awards.php . Not only this public two days event included air demos by a Cheetah D, a static show by a newly delivered Saab Gripen and a Hawk, but the ' wow ' factor was surely generated with live air-to-air missile firings by General Des Barker (*), live bomb drops by one more Cheetah and also more shootings and pyrotechnics from Rooivalks combat helicopters. Agusta 109, Puma SA-330 Oryx and Cheetahs launched flares as much as the show budget could sponsor these. Thunder City privately owned Lightning supersonic jets collection - based in Le Cap Province - remain an absolute ' must ' to be viewed in the largest airshows organised in Africa. Thunder City also owns its own Buccaneers, Hunters, and all ' Thunder ' types took part in the flying.
(*) We point out the fact that Gen Des Barker is an aviation safety expert whose knowledge received recognition during the European Airshow Council 2007 Convention and seminar www.european-airshow.com .
2008 African Aerospace and Defence Ysterplaat event - runned last 17 to 21 September was another event not to be missed gathering the same style of items near Table Mountain superb landscape. Notice that South African Air Force Silver Falcons team flies four Pilatus Astras. This National Team remains to be displayed somewhere else, why not in Europe in the future (?). During the event a huge A 340-600 was escorted by these tiny turboprops.
Sky-Lens'Aviation' will probably visit one of these events in a future date, and meanwhile we are very glad to be associated to image producers in the land of rooivalks.
First of all we recommend Le Cirque Volant magazine, http://www.sky-lens.com/articles-reports-air-events.php?recordID=71 , and we also suggest to watch videos from the Black Eagle Projects www.blackeagleprojects.co.za produced by Andrew Shofield and his chaps to get an insight into the african airscene. Andrew 's works also include topics from the UK airscene, such as air-to-air shots from one of the Delta Jets Hawker Hunter that flew with the RAF Red Arrows at Biggin Hill Air Fair 2007.
